You could try contacting these people. I know there are dealers, specifically in compacts. An antique shop (not junk shop!) may be able to give you some contacts. I wouldn't put it on e-bay until you know exactly what you have there, it sounds quite interesting, they can be very collectable and worth quite a bit.

I am not sure about the compact, but the The MV Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks on 21 June 1948. 492 passengers had paid the 拢28 10s fare to travel to Britain in search of work. .
